After a weekend in Prague, it was back to Brno and time to show my friend what Moravia has to offer. Every year at the beginning of May, Brno is usually bombarded with groups of 19/20 year old school leavers wandering the streets in fancy dress and asking for money. And today they were out in force. The groups of young people wandering the streets asking for money are final year high school classes, about to take their school leaving exam, or Maturita as it is known, who need to collect money in order to buy a few drinks to celebrate in the pub after their exams. Sounds odd, but this is a well established tradition in the Czech Republic, and most people are willing to donate the odd crown or two. As well as "begging" for money, each class in their last year of school has their photo taken. Like a year book I guess. The difference is, the class think of a theme, dress up accordingly, have their photos taken, and then displays them in shop windows around town. Naturally my friend found the whole thing fascinating. The photo for the day is of a Maturita class who have chosen "playboy" as their theme and displayed their class photos in one of the shops near the main square.I wonder if I'll be seeing any of them in my English class at uni come September :-)
